Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment
Who Answers?
There are many different kinds of outpatient treatment centers that provide a wide range of programs to help individual's overcome the use of substances and recover. Some outpatient programs offer more intense forms of therapy than others. Outpatient settings are less helpful for people who suffer from chronic addiction or have used substances for a long period of time.
Outpatient treatment programs are less expensive than residential treatment and are extremely beneficial for patients needing to maintain employment or schooling. Patients are able to remain in their homes with their families and still receive treatment and therapy during their recovery. This can be challenging for some people because patients are still around their normal surroundings and aren't always able to avoid people or situations that can trigger substance use. Patients have to be very diligent when it comes to avoiding situations that can lead to relapse during this time.
As stated above there are a variety of different programs utilized in outpatient substance abuse treatment settings such as Behavior Treatment like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or Multidimensional Family Therapy and some outpatient treatment settings may provide detoxification. Other programs may include:
- Addiction Education
- Individual Counseling
- Group Counseling
- 12 Step Programs
- Motivational incentives
- Family Counseling
It's extremely important for anyone working toward recovery from substance use and addiction to surround them self with positive support during this time. Some outpatient programs recommend their clients to attend self- help meetings like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous in their local area to help strengthen their sobriety and recovery.

I'm so glad that I cracked open the phone book six months ago. While flipping through the pages I found that several outpatient rehab options were available in my area. For the last decade I had been avoiding going to rehab because I thought I would have to quit my job to go live at a treatment facility. I absolutely adore my job as a horse trainer and couldn't stand the thought of giving it up.
As the reality that rehab was an option started to grow more and more clear, I started to become nervous and anxious. addiction was how I coped with my life. It was my best friend during the best of my life and the worst of my life. It was the only constant aspect of my life. Rehab meant I'd have to give up my addiction. Suddenly courage filled my body when I realized that I could accomplish so much more with my life if I were clean and sober. I might even be able to date again because I'd have time after work to meet men instead of simply retreating into my cave of an apartment and getting high.
I called the first outpatient rehab center I found in the phone book and went to treatment that evening. Six months now I've been clean and sober. I've met a wonderful man whom I love getting to know and have grown more successful in my career than I ever thought possible, all thanks to rehab.
I always thought I was taking care of my kids by not going to rehab. I didn't want to have to make my kids move in with my parents so I could go to rehab. I'm a single mom and my kids, along with everyone else I knew, thought I work as a waitress at a late-night diner. My kids didn't know I was an exotic dancer and sometimes worked as an escort. I was ashamed of what I did to earn money. If I wasn't an addict I could have paid the bills on a waitress's wage, but I spent over half of my earnings every night getting drugs.
One day my friend found out what I did for work and asked why I lied to her about being a waitress. I told her I was embarrassed and ashamed that I had to do a job I would never want to see my daughter doing to fund my addiction and be able to keep a roof over my kids' heads. When I explained to my friend that I wanted to get clean but didn't think it would be good for my kids to stay with my parents while I went to rehab, she asked me if I had considered outpatient rehab. I hadn't. I didn't even know it existed. With her help I got into treatment that afternoon. I've now been clean for a year and really am a waitress. I'm going back to school to be a teacher and am proud of the mother and friend I have become.
